Important conversation on Facebook
The following Facebook conversation came up last week. A follower asked a good question:
“That the number of abortions has dropped is great news. But I am very suspicious about the women leaving for health care reasons claim. Since the Heartbeat Law was written to ensure women would be able to get treatment including dealing with miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies without the doctors facing charges I have to ask “What is the rest of the story?” Are the women being lied to about what care they can get, or is that term being used to mislead by making it seem that what is actually leaving for abortions is something else?”
Pulse Executive Director, Maggie DeWitte responded:
The abortion industry is using ‘fear-mongering’ tactics to make women and the public think that they will not get care for ectopic/miscarriage care. No abortion restriction would ever prevent a doctor from performing essential medical care to a woman.
The sad reality is that women are leaving Iowa to go to our neighboring states (Minnesota, Illinois) where they have virtually no abortion restrictions to have elective abortions. The other sad reality is that many women in Iowa and across the country are going on-line to order abortion pills and having them mailed through the US postal service. Coupled with this is that many states with no restrictions on abortion have passed shield laws that allow them to be protected from other states who might file a suit against them for prescribing/shipping abortion drugs to women in states with strict abortion regulations. The AG in Texas is attempting to sue a doctor in NY who prescribed abortion pills to a woman in TX; but because NY has a shield law, they are not complying with the lawsuit. We hope this will result in the case going before the US Supreme Court so they can rule and hopefully eliminate these so-called shield laws.
So, our work continues with the biggest threat being the abortion pills and the on-line access with no regulations at all.
