Greatest love songs ever: #29 “Happy Together”
This frothy confection vaulted to number one on the Billboard charts in 1967. “Happy Together” is a simply delightful example of American pop music at its finest. It is full of life, conveying the exuberance of young love.
Writing credits go to Alan Gordon and Garry Bonner.
I love this song. It makes me feel young each time I hear it. Just watch The Turtles perform their hit song above. Dig the hats, the clothes, and the sideburns. But most of all, sit back and soak in the joyousness they express singing this song.
It’s just plain fun.
The first verse sets the stage as one grapples with that first blush of love:
“Imagine me and you, I do,
I think about you day and night,
It’s only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight.
So happy together!”
It builds to a rollicking refrain that sticks with you forever:
“I can’t see me lovin’ nobody but you for all my life
When you’re with me, baby, the skies will be blue for all my life.”
Love it!
The Turtles cranked out a string of hits in the late sixties with “Happy Together” being their biggest.
I discovered a big band treatment of the song performed by Canadian crooner, Matt Forbes. It’s a whole different vibe than that of a sixties rock band, but the songs still holds up.
A big band version of “Happy Together”
I keep asking myself why I like this song so much. Don’t know for sure, except I just do. Maybe it was the era I came of age. Whatever. All I know is that it is a proud addition to my list of the 52 Greatest Love Songs Ever.
We need more songs like this one, because love is the antidote to abortion. And who doesn’t pray that the “skies will be blue for all my life!”
Next week’s song continues the same vibe I feel with this week’s entry. It’s a love song that just makes me happy. Check back. Happy Together! Love it.
How can anyone not love it?!
