Iowa governor candidates’ position on abortion

Iowa governor candidates’ position on abortion

Iowa has had a historic string of legislative victories on behalf of unborn Iowans over the past dozen years. Governor Kim Reynolds has presided over most of these legislative achievements, signing every pro-life piece of legislation put on her desk. With her pending retirement, Pulse looks at Iowa governor candidates’ position on abortion.

Zach Lahn is the pro-life Republican candidate, and Rob Sand is his pro-abortion Democrat counterpart.

Lahn’s website is straight to the point on his pro-life position:

“Every life is a gift from God and it is our duty to protect life before birth, as well as after birth by addressing chronic health issues facing our kids.”

Lahn particularly opposes abortion pills sent via the U.S. Postal Service without a woman ever meeting with a physician:

Sand’s website features a press release that characterizes Iowa’s Heartbeat Law as ‘extreme’:

“Participants also discussed the impacts of Iowa’s extreme 6-week abortion ban signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds and how it has impacted providers’ ability to stay in the state.”

The press release returns to abortion a little later:

“Health care providers told Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand on Wednesday that issues like Iowa’s privatized Medicaid system and restrictions on abortion are furthering problems in delivering and accessing health care in rural areas.”

This makes no sense, as abortion has nothing to do with healthcare. A unique human being dies with each abortion. Mothers are often left with emotional, spiritual, and even physical after effects.

In a public forum, Sand stated that as governor he would veto any future pro-life legislation passed by the Iowa legislature.

As Pulse reported earlier this year, the number of unborn Iowans killed by abortion last year plummeted by 979 abortions thanks to passage of the Heartbeat Bill. A governor Sand would have vetoed that law had he been governor at the time.

Those 979 Iowa citizens would all be dead had Rob Sand been governor.

Zach Lahn and Rob Sand have staked out diametrically opposed positions on abortion.

Zach Lahn: pro-life.

Rob Sand: pro-abortion.
