Abortion remains a priority…
Abortion remains a priority among conservative advocacy groups
Among the issues Iowa Republicans are emphasizing ahead of the midterm elections, abortion policy remains a key focus. Groups such as Pulse Life Advocates are working to advance their positions on abortion restrictions and engage voters on the issue.
The organization’s priorities include supporting legislation that would protect human life from conception, Maggie DeWitte, executive director of Pulse Life Advocates said. The group plans to continue advocating for a life-at-conception bill, which would extend legal protections from the moment of fertilization.
“The heartbeat law has been the strictest law we’ve been able to pass to uphold life, but it wasn’t far enough,” DeWitte said. “This is an issue that Iowans care deeply about, and they want their legislators to also care about it as well.”
Iowa’s heartbeat bill, signed into law in 2023, bans abortions when cardiac activity is detected in an ultrasound. This usually occurs around the six-week mark of the pregnancy.
In the governor’s race, DeWitte pointed to differences between Republican candidate Zach Lahn and Democratic candidate Rob Sand on abortion policy. Lahn has expressed support for protecting life at conception, while Sand has said he supports women’s reproductive rights and opposes Iowa’s six-week abortion ban.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the organization does not directly participate in elections through political action committees, DeWitte said. Rather, it focuses on educating voters on candidates’ positions on anti-abortion policies.
“We’re helping people understand what a piece of legislation would mean for them, and the impact, and whether they should support it, and whether it supports life,” DeWitte said.
